Gentle Leader Use & Training

Introducing Gentle Leaders at Basin Run Animal Hospital

Help your dog walk calmly and comfortably, while strengthening your bond.

Why We Recommend Gentle Leaders

At Basin Run Animal Hospital, we’re always looking for safe, effective tools to improve the lives of pets and their families. That’s why we now carry Gentle Leaders and offer personalized training sessions with one of our amazing RVTs.

Gentle Leaders can make walks more enjoyable by:

  • Providing gentle, humane control on walks

  • Reducing pulling and lunging

  • Helping improve focus and responsiveness

Important Things to Know About Gentle Leaders

  • Gentle Leaders are a training tool to be used with a leash. It should not be left on the dog if the dog isn’t on leash or if the dog is unattended. Dogs will also wear their regular collar with ID and rabies tags along with the Gentle Leader.

  • They are not recommended for brachycephalic dogs (dogs with a flat face). For those dogs, we recommend an Easy Walk Harness, which attaches in the front.

  • Acclimating your dog is an important part of the training process. Each dog is unique in how quickly or slowly they accept it — go at your dog’s pace and don’t rush the process.
